Cosmos Flowers

Hijiki District

The Hijiki Cosmos Festival is held in mid-October every year. At this cosmos field in Iga's Hijiki District, a carpet of red, white, and pink cosmos flowers covers the landscape, attracting throngs of visitors.

Just south of Iga Railway Idamichi Station is a field of cosmos flowers. When the timing is right, you can see trains on Iga Railway passing by on the other side of the cosmos field.

 Autumn Leaves

Shindaibutsuji Temple

Theory has it that this temple served as a model for the reconstruction of the Great Buddha Hall of Todaiji Temple. The autumn leaves of 200-year-old Japanese maple trees decorate the path leading to the main hall of the temple.

Foliage at Minomushian

A thatched-roof hut that once belonged to Hattori Toho, a disciple of Basho, Minomushian is the only one of Basho’s five hermitages (Mumyoan, Seireian, Toreian, Hyochikuan, and Minomushian) that still exists today. The place is known for its lovely Japanese maples and moss.

蓑虫庵の紅葉

Basho no Mori Park

Approximately 200 Japanese maple trees are planted in this park, which offers beautiful scenery of the trees throughout all four seasons. The observation deck also offers a panoramic view of Iga-Ueno Castle.

芭蕉の森公園

Iga-Ueno Castle Takigi-Noh Performance

Takigi Noh is a theatrical performance held at night illuminated by torches performed every year since 1984 as part of the castle festival from September to November. For one night only, a special stage is set up in Ueno Castle’s Honmaru Plaza, where you can enjoy Noh and Kyogen performances. Iga is also the birthplace of historical Noh actor and author Kannami.

Iga Ware Works Fair

The sight of various Iga Ware works, including unique and limited-edition pieces by a diverse range of ceramic artists, displayed throughout the exhibition hall is spectacular. Large numbers of pottery enthusiasts from both inside and outside the prefecture visit this event, with many popular items being sold at bargain prices. Here, you can also speak directly with the artists, and during the three days of the event, you are bound to find a piece you will love.

Tejikara Shrine Fireworks

Every year on October 17, the Annual Festival Dedication Fireworks Display is held at Tejikara Shrine in Higashiyubune, Iga. Commonly known as Tejikara-san's Seventeenth Night, it is the latest of the fireworks displays held in the Iga region, with approximately 250 fireworks lighting up the night sky in autumn. On the night of the fireworks, the temple grounds bustle with visitors and shop stalls.

Ueno Tenjin Festival

The Ueno Tenjin Festival is an autumn festival held at Ueno Tenjingu Shrine and the largest autumn festival in Iga with a history of about 400 years. Its highlights include a parade of portable shrines accompanied by more than one hundred demons and nine gorgeously decorated Danjiri floats. The Danjiri procession of the Ueno Tenjin Festival was designated as a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property in February 2002, and it was also registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in November 2016 under the name “Yama, Hoko, Yatai, float festivals in Japan”.

Takiyama Valley Autumn Leaves Festival

Shop stalls are set up around Shirafuji Falls, where there are fun events and visitors can enjoy both the seasonal colors of the waterfall and autumn flavors to their fullest. There's also a haiku contest that anyone is welcome to join. The color of the leaves at Shirafuji Falls changes around mid-November, somewhat late compared to other parts of the Iga region.
